About Us
Mission
To provide and
coordinate comprehensive, effective resources to nonprofit agencies in Northern
Arizona.

We are happy to announce that
Nonprofit Resource Center of Northern Arizona (NPRC) has joined
with the
Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits. Thus, the current members of
NPRC have become members of the Alliance, with full rights, privileges
and benefits of Alliance membership as of April 1, 2009. NPRC
members can continue to expect quality services, valuable information
and training, and a high level of customer service, which have been
hallmarks of NPRC since its founding 7 years ago. In addition, these
members will enjoy an array of benefits and services and representation
in public policy provided by the Alliance, a statewide organization
dedicated to strengthening nonprofits in every corner of Arizona.
The Alliance celebrates the
achievements and commitment to excellence demonstrated by NPRC
as it developed and grew over the past several years. Nonprofits in northern Arizona have been well served by long-time NPRC
Executive Director Christina Boyd and the members of the NPRC
Advisory Board and Board of Directors. Because of their vision,
leadership and commitment, the unique interests of northern
Arizona nonprofits have been heard and articulated. The Alliance
is committed to continuing to serve these interests, with the
same level of dedication to unique regional issues as
demonstrated in other parts of Arizona, such as the partnership
with the Yuma Area Nonprofit Institute and local nonprofit
groups in southern Arizona. To assure the smooth transition of
NPRC perspectives and values into the Alliance, a Transition
Task Force will meet throughout the next few months with the
goals of examining the strengths of each organization and
leveraging those for the benefit of all members.
Members of NPRC will soon receive
their welcome packets from the Alliance, with information on all
of the benefits and services they will begin receiving. To learn
more about these benefits, members should contact Sally
Clifford, Director of Member Relations for the Alliance at

HISTORY
The origins of the Nonprofit Resource Center lie in a
community-wide visioning process, Flagstaff 2020, which called upon community
members to work together to determine what greater Flagstaff would be like in
2020. Two goals of the visioning process spoke to the need for a
volunteer/resource center:
- "Creation of a Volunteer Coordinating Council to facilitate community service
programs"
- "Define, identify, promote, and recognize good citizenship"
In early 2000, following the Flagstaff 2020 visioning process, Volunteer
Associates assumed the role of Volunteer Coordinating Council. Volunteer
Associates was formed in 1998 and, having established the Youth Volunteer Corps,
was interested in continuing its efforts to develop a volunteer center. Surveys
were conducted to assess the need and desire for a volunteer center and the
response was overwhelming. A volunteer center was needed to act as an
information clearinghouse for non-profits, to promote volunteerism and provide
referrals of volunteers to agencies, and to offer training for both volunteers
and agency staff.
Simultaneous to the efforts of Volunteer Associates, a series of informal
discussions between the Flagstaff Community Foundation (FCF), the College of
Social and Behavioral Sciences at Northern Arizona University (NAU), and the
United Way of Northern Arizona (UWNA) were taking place. These organizations
were exploring the possibility of establishing programming to help build the
capacity of individual non-profits. UWNA and FCF developed a concept paper
outlining a nonprofit resource center for Northern Arizona.
These two efforts, one establishing a volunteer center and the other developing
capacity-building programming for nonprofits, converged when Volunteer
Associates asked UWNA to assume the lead in the planning effort. In the fall of
2000, UWNA applied for, and received, funding from the Governor's office to
support a community-wide planning effort. Both Volunteer Associates and UWNA
provided matching funds. The beginning of 2001 saw the formation of a Steering
Committee and five action teams, composed of personnel from various nonprofit
agencies, to research facilities, funding, programming, technology, and rural
outreach. The information collected was incorporated into a Strategic Plan. In
September, UWNA committed that it would provide oversight, funding, and space at
the UWNA office for resource center staff. With additional funding provided by
Flagstaff Community Foundation, Northern Arizona University, and Volunteer
Associates, a Project Manager and Communications Specialist were hired in
October to begin implementing the plans for the resource center.
In January of 2002, the Steering Committee reorganized and expanded into an
Advisory Board, and by May NPRC was taking shape. The end of 2002 brought to a
close the two-year stewardship by UWNA. NPRC received funding from and is now a
project of the Flagstaff Community Foundation/Arizona Community Foundation in
collaboration with Coconino Community College, Flagstaff City-Coconino County
Public Library, Flagstaff Cultural Partners, Northern Arizona University, United
Way of Northern Arizona, and Volunteer Associates.
NPRC opened its doors and launched its Web site in May of 2003. The resource
center has developed into a strong online presence which makes it easy to find
the people, information and expertise needed to develop a healthy and effective
organization – all without leaving the office. NPRC is physically located in the
East Flagstaff Community Library, 3000 N. Fourth Street , Flagstaff . The center
houses a state-of-the-art library of reference books and periodicals, the
Foundation Center database of potential funders, the Arizona Guide to Grants
Online and a computer for public use in searching for volunteer opportunities or
researching grant information.
